Carrie Underwood matches her second-longest stay atop Billboard's Hot Country Songs chart with "Something in the Water," which collects a fifth cumulative week at No. 1 on the sales/airplay/streaming-based survey.
Her first official country single, "Jesus, Take the Wheel," remains her longest-running No. 1: six weeks in early 2006. "Water" matches the five-week command of Underwood's third promoted country single, "Before He Cheats," which first crowned the chart in November 2006. ("Water" is Underwood's first song to dominate for more than even one week since "Just a Dream" logged two frames on top in 2008.)
Concurrently, "Water" logs a sixth cumulative week at No. 1 on Country Digital Songs, with 46,000 downloads sold (down 39 percent) in the week ending Jan. 4; it has sold 714,000 to date, according to Nielsen Music.
The song also gains traction at Christian radio, rebounding after the holiday break with a No. 31 re-entry (marking a new peak position) on the Christian Airplay chart. It leads the multi-metric Hot Christian Songs survey for a 14th frame (extending her record for the longest reign by a woman) and Christian Digital Songs for a 13th frame.
'BOOTS' BOOSTS: On Top Country Albums, Jason Aldean's Old Boots, New Dirt makes its second return to No. 1 (20,000 sold) since debuting at the apex (Oct. 25), logging a third cumulative week on top. It spent its second week at No. 1 on the Nov. 22 chart. The set has sold 773,000 since its release.
COUNTRY GETS INTO 'TROUBLE': Gloriana posts a career-best debut on Hot Country Songs (No. 45) with "Trouble." The trio previously launched as high as No. 49 with "Best Night Ever" back in June.
SENTIMENTAL JOURNEY: Garth Brooks debuts at No. 49 on Hot Country Songs with "Mom," the second single from Man Against Machine (No. 5 on Top Country Albums). The ballad bows solely from airplay, as songs from the album are not available digitally a la carte and are absent from streaming platforms.
"Mom" is Brooks' 83rd entry on Hot Country Songs. Dating to Oct. 20, 1958, when Billboard's various country charts were combined into one comprehensive list, Brooks remains in 12th place among artists with the most charted songs.
REBA'S RETURN: Looking ahead to next week's charts, Reba McEntire (who's charted 98 entries on Hot Country Songs, the fourth-highest total) released a new single to radio and digital retailers Tuesday (Jan. 6), "Going Out Like That." The mid-tempo track is likely to impact Country Digital Songs next week. It introduces the Country Music Hall of Famer's first new album in four years, expected in April.
