In the midst of the trademark infringement battle between Disney and Deadmau5, the EDM star (real name Joel Zimmerman) served Disney with a cease and desist last week when the corporation released a video of Mickey Mouse soundtracked by one of his songs, "Ghosts 'n' Stuff."
According to Zimmerman, he never gave Disney permission to use his song in their "Re-Micks" video.
Disney, however, disagrees.
"The music was appropriately licensed, and there is no merit to his statement," a spokesperson from Disney said in a statement to Billboard. "Disney vigorously protects its trademark rights, and we oppose Mr. Zimmerman's attempt to register a logo that is nearly identical to our trademarks for his commercial exploitation. Our opposition is not about the use of the Deadmau5 costume."
Disney starting investigating Deadmau5's attempt to trademark his mouse head-and-ears logo six months ago. They recently filed papers voicing their opposition to his would-be trademark, arguing it is too similar to their iconic logo.
