With 5.3 million followers on Vine looping their six-second clips more than 14 million times a week, rap duo Jack & Jack have garnered a big enough fan base to make a serious impact on the Billboard charts. Composed of Jack Johnson (not the surfer-turned-folk rocker) and Jack Gilinsky (who sings the hooks), the Omaha duo has gained traction with “Like That,” which hit No. 36 on Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs, and “Wild Life,” which peaked at No. 87 on the Hot 100.
Both of these tracks have also made their mark with fans on Twitter, who shared them so much that they’ve topped the weekly Billboard + Twitter Top Tracks chart.
Billboard sat down with Jack and Jack in the studio to discuss how Vine “sparked it all,” causing the duo to have to make a tough call about whether they should attend college right away -- a decision that has certainly paid off for them. In the year that’s followed, Jack & Jack have been lifted from the world of Vine to onstage in front of live audiences filled with their fans.
The duo also struggles with being labeled “social media kids,” a struggle many from the YouTube and Vine community face when they become popular enough on those channels and get recognized by the often-condescending established media.
