Discovery, "LP"

Album Review

Vampire Weekend keyboardist/producer Rostam Batmanglij and Ra Ra Riot singer Wes Miles are making bold moves this summer with their new experimental electro-pop musical project Discovery. Last year, each band released an album that appeared on the Billboard 200, which should provide momentum for Discovery's debut release, "LP." Opening track "Orange Shirt" is a radiant cut that sets the tone for the rest of the 10-track album. Batmanglij and Miles keep things interesting by trading African and modern R&B beats on "Can You Discover?," which sounds like a re-worked version of Ra Ra Riot's "Can You Tell." The duo paints a rainbow over its own version The Jackson 5's "I Want You Back," with enhanced bass and repeatedly high-pitched, auto-tune vocals. As expected, "LP" features vocal appearances by the Dirty Projectors' Angel Deradoorian and Vampire Weekend's Ezra Koenig. Overall, the combination of Miles' bright auto-tune vocals and Batmanglij's impressive work on the synthesizer prove to be a successful pairing. --Rachel Helman
