Coachella Cruise Announced: Pulp, Girl Talk, Sleigh Bells Aboard
Inaugural trip to set sail in December
Goldenvoice, promoters of Coachella, have announced the launch of a Coachella cruise slated to set sail in December. S.S. Coachella will include performances from Pulp, Hot Chip, Yeasayer, Sleigh Bells, Killer Mike, !!!, and a DJ set from former LCD Soundsystem mastermind James Murphy, who will also reportedly hold a wine tasting aboard the cruise.
The tour will have two legs aboard the Celebrity Silhouette: a three-day tour of the Bahamas beginning Dec. 16 and a four-day excursion to Jamaica that starts Dec. 19. Both trips depart from Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., and prices start at $500 per person.
The company teased the announcement -- or, at least, an announcement of something -- with a tweet yesterday that simply reads: "Tuesday 6pm PDT." The Coachella voyage is the latest artist-based cruise to set sail after similar trips planned around Weezer and R. Kelly were recently announced.
Goldenvoice president and Coachella co-founder Paul Tollett has in the past been reluctant to extend the brand. Tollett told Billboard in an interview earlier this year, "Generally, I don't want to use the Coachella name for other events, but I'm open-minded. In 13 years nothing has intrigued us yet."
The Coachella cruise is not the first time Tollett has caught the live-music industry off guard. Last year Goldenvoice announced that the 2012 event would be staged with identical lineups on consecutive weekends, a move that garnered mixed reactions from the business at large as to both creative and commercial viability.
But the instincts of Tollett and his team were once again on target, as Coachella notched the highest box office for a festival ever reported to Billboard Boxscore at $47,313,403, with 158,387 tickets sold for both weekends combined.
The festival has given Goldenvoice considerable clout in its Indio, California base: Despite fears that new tax regulations were set to push the festival out of the town, a lawmaker who proposed a new ticket tax backed down from the proposed legislation after Tollett vowed that he would not pass that $36 tax on to ticket buyers, and that he would consider cancelling the 2014 festival and moving to a new locale for 2015.
