In 1996, we welcomed Dolly the Sheep (the world’s first cloned mammal), the launch of the Spice Girl’s debut single, and witnessed the divorce of Prince Charles and Princess Diana. It was a memorable year, and likewise, these summer songs will never be forgotten.

We'll breakdown 1996, but you can relive all your summer anthems year by year:   1995 | 1996 | 1997 | 1998 | 1999 | 2000 | 2001 | 2002 | 2003 | 2004 | 2005 | 2006 | 2007 | 2008 | 2009 | 2010 | 2011 | 2012 | 2013

“Macarena (Bayside Boys Mix)” - Los Del Rio

The ever-popular Spanish dance song “Macarena” instantly became a worldwide hit, especially when the Bayside Boys added English lyrics into the mix. It spent much of the summer at number one on the Billboard charts and not only did everyone follow the dance craze, but it still shakes weddings and parties today. No one can resist getting up on the dance floor when it's “Macarena” time.

"How Do U Want It"/"California Love" - 2Pac feat. K-Ci And JoJo

The late Tupac Shakur was one of the biggest selling rappers of all time. “How Do U Want It”/”California Love” was among the last of his releases before his tragic death in September of 1996. The music video portrays a wild sex party where the party-goers are dressed in Renaissance costumes. Plus there’s an uncensored version of the video that includes nude scenes.

"Always Be My Baby" - Mariah Carey

Carey’s “Always Be My Baby” shot straight to the top of the charts and featured a “do do do” section that was impossible not to sing along to. Carey was famous for her long locks, loose curls, impressive vocal power and five-octave vocal range. The music video for this song shows Mariah on a rope swing above a lake at a campsite—how did she make it look so effortless?!

"C'mon N' Ride It (The Train)" - Quad City DJs

The Quad City DJs were an American producer duo, and this Miami bass song features the vocals of JeLana LeFleur. A popular dance began based on the track, which is presented in the music video. Not quite so well-known as the “Macarena”, but it was a big hit in the '90s, and is sometimes still played at dance clubs.

"Because You Loved Me" - Celine Dion

Canadian singer Celine Dion released “Because You Loved Me” in ‘96, although it was written by Diane Warren for the theme of  'Up Close & Personal.' It won the Grammy for ‘Best Song Written Specifically For A Motion Picture or Television’. Dion gave a notable live performance of the song at the 1997 Academy Awards, showing off her incredible vocals, especially in the euphoric key change of the ballad. We all wish we could sing like her.

Remember researching online before Google was around? In 1996, Ask Jeeves was formed, and soon began the phase of asking all manner of questions to a friendly butler character over the internet. Yes, yes … butler-based search ...

Those were good times.
