We'll breakdown 1997, but you can relive all the Hot 100's number one hits year by year:

In 1997, the murder of the Notorious B.I.G. shocked the entire music industry. The late rapper's death hit especially hard for his label mates at Bad Boy Records, and Puff Daddy and collaborators released the hit single "I'll Be Missing You" in honor of their friend, which stayed at No. 1 on the Hot 100 for several weeks. In the same year, the beloved Princess Diana also passed away, prompting yet another tribute single to hold onto the No. 1 spot for 12 weeks in mourning, this one from her fan and friend Sir Elton John
