Olivia Rodrigo and Joshua Bassett in "High School Musical: The Musical: The Series" season 2

Nini and Ricky are going long-distance in season 2 of 'High School Musical: The Musical: The Series,' which premieres May 14 on Disney+.

High School Musical: The Musical: The Series unveiled its official trailer for season 2 on Thursday (April 8) ahead of its Disney+ premiere next month.

In typical Disney fashion, the East High Wildcats are gearing up for their spring musical Beauty and the Beast while facing off against their North High rivals performing The Little Mermaid in the cutthroat Alan Menken Awards for High School Musical Theater.

Meanwhile, Nini's (Olivia Rodrigo) admission into the Youth Actors Conservatory forces her and Ricky (Joshua Bassett) to explore a long-distance relationship while she misses out on the musical. The second season of HSMTMTS follows a similar storyline to that of High School Musical 3: Senior Year, when Troy (Zac Efron) and Gabriella's (Vanessa Hudgens) are long-distance while she heads off to college early and nearly misses their last spring musical before graduation.

Breakout stars Rodrigo and Bassett wrote brand-new solo songs for this season following the major successes of their real-life careers. Her Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 "Drivers License" debut single recently became the first song to hit 1 billion global streams in 2021 after it spent eight weeks at No. 1 on the Hot 100 and Billboard Global 200 chart and nine weeks on the Billboard Global Excluding U.S. chart. Bassett's "Lie Lie Lie" earned him a spot in Billboard's Emerging Artists Spotlight in January.

Billboard exclusively broke the news in February that HSMTMTS added Broadway vet Andrew Barth Feldman (Dear Evan HansenRatatouille: The TikTok Musical) and television/film star Asher Angel (Shazam!) to the season 2 cast. The pair will join the previously announced slate of recurring guest stars Derek Hough (Zack), Roman Banks (Howie) and Olivia Rose Keegan (Lily), as well as series regulars Rodrigo, Bassett, Matt Cornett, Sofia Wylie, Larry Saperstein, Julia Lester, Dara Reneé, Frankie Rodriguez, Joe Serafini, Mark St. Cyr and Kate Reinders.
