Cheryl defended herself against the harsh backlash she received over her X Factor performance on Sunday night.

Cheryl performed her comeback single “Love Made Me Do It” on The X Factor in the U.K., taking the stage for the first time since the birth of her son Bear. After crawling across the stage and suggestively licking her own hand, many viewers claimed the performance was raunchy and inappropriate. According to The Daily Mail, 15 complaints were made to Ofcom, the television broadcasting regulator, about Cheryl’s performance. The quality of her vocals also came under fire from critical viewers.

The 35-year-old took to Twitter on Tuesday (Nov. 20) to share her own opinions on her X Factor performance. “I let a lot of things lie but the sheer level of unbalanced negativity towards me in the tabloid press these past few days has been quite frankly shocking,” Cheryl wrote. “This level of relentless abuse should not be tolerated in any walk of life.”

Cheryl then went on to mention that her “music and performances are never going to be for everyone,” before silencing her critics with her empowering final sentence: “I did watch my performance back and I LOVED IT!”
