Some One Direction fans are devastated after Louis Tomlinson referred to his role in the band using the past tense on The X-Factor on Saturday night (Oct. 20).

As Tomlinson helped contestant Brendan Murray prepare for his first X-Factor show, Murray admitted to Tomlinson that he joined a boy band at 16 and was disappointed that they failed to become successful.

“I get it,” Tomlinson responded. “I used to be in a band. You want to move on from it.”

Tomlinson’s allusion to the fact that the band’s supposed hiatus might be a lot more permanent than One Direction fans thought sent them into a frenzy on Twitter.

The X-Factor formed One Direction in 2010, and sent them skyrocketing to fame. The band went on hiatus after their last performance in December 2015, with Tomlinson, Niall Horan, Liam Payne, Harry Styles and Zayn Malik all going on to pursue solo careers. However, the band never ruled out getting together again at some point in the future. Even Tomlinson’s Twitter bio still reads, “1/4 of One Direction.”
