Nelly discussed his belief that quarterback Tom Brady and the rest of the team’s visit would merely distract the public from the issues with Trump’s presidency. “If you’re the president at this time and you’re sitting here, you need this,” Nelly states on the show. “You need your friend to come vouch for you. You need this validation.”
He went further to add that a number of players don’t plan to attend, as well as to take a quick shot at Trump. “Half of the team is not going,” said Nelly. “So I don’t know if you have to CGI in the players, or that selfie is going to be really small.”
Some Patriots players have publicly stated they won’t be partaking in the visit, including Martellus Bennett and Chris Long, among others.
While Nelly states his love for Brady, he suggests the quarterback played a part in players turning down the invitation when he first refused to visit under Obama’s administration.
“First of all, this man is the greatest quarterback to ever play this game. He just won a Super Bowl,” said Nelly. “You just called him the most clutch player since Michael Jordan. If he’s not going…He’s the captain -- he opened this box up. Tom Brady started this.”
