Adele and the American Music Awards: Real-Time Rewind for Thanksgiving 2015
Welcome back to Billboard's weekly video show "Real-Time Rewind," which recaps the past week's hottest action on the Billboard Real-Time Twitter Charts -- Trending 140 and Emerging Artists -- and the news that's driving the action. Shira Karsen hits the studio a special Thanksgiving episode, in which she offers thanks for Adele, The Weeknd, Drake, Selena Gomez, Austin Mahone, Charlie Puth and Nick Jonas!
So what happened on the Real-Time Charts this week?
25 to 1: Adele’s third album, 25, has finally arrived, and its release instantly shot off four new Trending 140 chart-toppers, “Remedy,” “All I Ask,” “I Miss You” and “Send My Love (To Your New Lover).”
The four new cuts follow the previous chart leaders “Hello” and “When We Were Young,” which Adele shared ahead of 25’s debut. Adele performed “Hello” and “Young” on Saturday Night Live on Nov. 21, sending both tracks darting to the top of the Trending 140. “Hello” earned an extra-boost from a Thanksgiving-themed skit that proved popular on social media.
25, one of the most anticipated albums in years, is off to a record start in its first week. The set has surpassed *NYSNC’s debut-week sales record, giving 25 the biggest start since Nielsen began tracking purchases in 1991.
Plus, The Weeknd and Selena Gomez added to their hit years with spots on the American Music Awards last weekend (Nov. 22). The Weeknd, who scored trophies for Favorite R&B/Soul Album and Favorite R&B/Soul Male Artist, performed his Trending 140 and Billboard Hot 100 chart topper “The Hills.” The cut is the third hit he’s racked up from his Beauty Behind The Madness album, following “Can’t Feel My Face” and “Earned It (Fifty Shades of Grey),” which first appeared on the Fifty Shades soundtrack, released in February.
Gomez brought another Trending 140 champ to the show, offering a performance of “Same Old Love” from her album Revival. When the set debuted in October, Selena scored nine of the week’s most discussed tracks on Twitter.
Meanwhile, Nick Jonas, Charlie Puth and Austin Mahone scored their biggest pop successes to date this year. Jonas cemented himself as a bonafide solo star thanks to his hits “Chains” and “Jealous,” and this fall, the trend continued. The former brotherly band mate’s “Levels” rose to the top of the Trending 140, showing a strong rally after he performed at the 2015 MTV VMAs and dropped the song’s video the same weekend.
Puth, teaming up with Wiz Khalifa, earned one of the year’s biggest smashes in “See You Again” from the Furious 7 soundtrack. The track became the top Tweeted song for three straight weeks in April – May, and held atop the Hot 100 for 12 nonconsecutive frames. The rookie singer-songwriter also scored hits this year with Lil Wayne ("Nothin But Trouble") and Meghan Trainor ("Marvin Gaye"). He and Trainor performed their duet at the AMAs, in a steamy set that sparked dating rumors.
Mahone, meanwhile, took his “Dirty Work” to No. 1 on the Trending 140. The cut reached the top slot across 18 different days, most recently on Nov. 17 after he shared a T-Pain remix on Soundcloud. The “Work” longevity proves the teen star’s power on social media. Mahone currently boasts 9.1 million followers on the platform.
