Sia, Justin Bieber & One Direction: Real-Time Rewind for Nov. 13
Welcome back to Billboard's weekly video show "Real-Time Rewind," which recaps the past week's hottest action on the Billboard Real-Time Twitter Charts -- Trending 140 and Emerging Artists -- and the news that's driving the action. Shira Karsen hits the studio for episode 75, which breaks down the latest hits from Sia, Justin Bieber and One Direction!
So what happened on the Real-Time Charts this week?
Sia blasts back onto the Trending 140 with a one-two punch. Her first track, “Alive,” which the pop star penned with Adele and Tobias Jesso Jr., re-enters after its music video release on Nov. 5, and darted to No. 1 on the Trending 140 the same day. The clip continues Sia’s recent practice of not appearing in her own videos: This time, a young martial artist practices her moves while donning the Australian singer’s new hairstyle, a straightened half-black, half-blond top.
Meanwhile, the Aussie songbird offered fans a new track in “Bird Set Free,” which dropped Nov. 3. Sia performed both “Alive” and “Free” during her turn as the musical guest on the Nov. 7 episode of Saturday Night Live, which was hosted by Donald Trump. The two cuts are the first offerings from her forthcoming studio album, This Is Acting, due out Jan. 29. Sia has stated the album is composed mainly of songs she intended to give to other artists, including Beyoncé and Rihanna.

Also, Justin Bieber’s fourth album, Purpose, drops on Nov. 13. The superstar released another of the album’s cuts, “Love Yourself” on Monday (Nov. 9) on Beats 1 Radio. The track, co-written by Ed Sheeran, easily leapt to No. 1 on the Trending 140 and held a solid lock on the top spot for four hours.
Bieber’s homestretch week heading into Purpose’s release included a media blitz. The singer appeared all week on The Ellen DeGeneres Show for #BieberWeek, and dropped a series of short videos featuring Ben Stiller reprising his Zoolander character to promote the work (Bieber will appear in Zoolander 2.)
Bieber’s got stiff competition for a No. 1 album, as One Direction’s Made in the A.M. will be released on Nov. 13 as well. The pop juggernauts also dropped several new songs ahead of the album’s release, including “History” on Nov. 6, “End of the Day” on Nov. 9, “Love You Goodbye” on Nov. 10 and “What A Feeling” on Nov. 11. Each song topped the Trending 140 for multiple hours in the lead-up and immediately after its release.
Along with the album’s other released tracks – “Drag Me Down,” “Infinity,” “Perfect” and “Home,” the British boy band has posted a whopping eight Trending 140 No. 1s heading into the A.M. release date. The album is the group’s final release before planning an extended break early next year.
