Hailee Steinfeld, Lana Del Rey, The Band Perry & Melanie Martinez: Real-Time Twitter Chart Rewind
Welcome back to Billboard's weekly video show "Real-Time Rewind," which recaps the past week's hottest action on the Billboard Real-Time Twitter Charts -- Trending 140 and Emerging Artists -- and the news that's driving the action. Shira Karsen hits the studio for episode 63, which delves into the latest hits from Hailee Steinfeld, Lana Del Rey, Fifth Harmony, Little Mix, The Band Perry & Melanie Martinez.
So what happened on the Real-Time Charts this week?
Lots of 'Love' for Steinfeld: Oscar-nominated actress Hailee Steinfeld (True Grit, Pitch Perfect 2, and Taylor Swift's star-studded "Bad Blood" video) launches onto the Trending 140 with her debut single, "Love Myself." Several of Steinfeld’s former co-stars and friends took to social media to praise the song, with Demi Lovato, Lena Dunham and Brittany Snow as just a few of the stars offering approval. "Love Myself" is from the 18-year-old’s debut album, which may be out by the end of the year.
Lana Del Rey Gets 'High': Lana Del Rey soaks up some space on the Trending 140 with "High by the Beach," which clocked in 17 hours in the top 10 thanks to its moody music video. "Beach" is the second Del Rey release in recent weeks, following her song "Honeymoon," which the singer posted a link to on Twitter in late July. Both tracks are expected to be featured on her upcoming album, Honeymoon, expected for release later this year.
Ladies' Choice: The 2015 Teen Choice Awards on FOX (Aug. 16) also sparked some big chart moves on the Trending 140 as winners took to Twitter to celebrate their awards. Though One Direction were the telecast’s biggest winners with 8 awards, two girl groups ruled the Trending 140: Fifth Harmony and Little Mix. Their tracks "Worth It" and "Black Magic," respectively, both leapt to No. 1 on the Trending 140 following their wins. The ladies of Fifth Harmony scored three trophies -- choice summer song, choice music group: female and choice female hottie -- while the members of Little Mix nabbed the honor for choice international artist.
Hat Trick: Country hitmakers The Band Perry return to the charts this week with their new cut, "Live Forever." The band's new inspirational anthem flew to No. 1 on the Trending 140 upon release and topped the chart on three separate days. The motivational message also attracted some big supporters including Lady Gaga, Echosmith and Brad Paisley, who all took to Twitter to shout out the siblings' new single.
"Sippy Cup" Goes Up: Finally, a memorable contestant from NBC’s The Voice hits the charts with her debut album -- and it's causing a splash. Melanie Martinez, from the singing show's third season, has released her debut album, Cry Baby. The set's breakout track, "Sippy Cup," climbed to the top of the Trending 140 and its sinister music video held many viewers' attention... You may want to leave the lights on.
The Trending 140 chart measures the acceleration of conversation around artists and their music, while the Emerging Artists chart measures the volume of tweets around new artists and their songs.
