Justin Bieber, One Direction & Jack & Jack: Real-Time Twitter Chart Rewind Episode 61

Welcome back to Billboard's weekly video show "Real-Time Rewind," which recaps the past week's hottest action on the Billboard Real-Time Twitter Charts -- Trending 140 and Emerging Artists -- and the news that's driving the action. Shira Karsen hits the studio for episode 61, which delves into the latest hits from Justin Bieber and One Direction, plus Jack & Jack make their chart return.

So what happened on the Real-Time Charts this week?

Justin Bieber's already collected a hit... for a song no one's heard yet.

The pop star revealed on July 29 that his new single "What Do You Mean?" will be released Aug. 28, and the announcement alone sent the track darting to No. 1 on the Trending 140. "What Do You Mean?" is expected to be the lead single of Bieber’s forthcoming album, his first studio album since 2012's Believe. Despite the three-year gap, the Bieber has kept busy with other projects, including his hit collaboration with Skrillex and Diplo, "Where Are U Now."

Bieber's upcoming track also benefits from a star-studded promotional campaign. Every day, one of the singer’s famous friends (Ryan Seacrest, Mariah Carey, Kylie Jenner and Shaquille O'Neal) posts a sign with the number of days remaining until the "What Do You Mean?" release.

1D Takes Over: Meanwhile, One Direction’s surprise single "Drag Me Down" had an explosive start. The track, released early Friday morning (July 31), topped the Trending 140 for more than 14 hours and broke the one-day Spotify streaming record previously held by Wiz Khalifa and Charlie Puth's "See You Again."

Notably, "Drag Me Down" is the group's first release since member Zayn Malik parted ways from the group in March. Just days before "Drag Me Down" debuted, Malik announced that he had signed a deal with RCA Records. He also sent a tweet that some took as a dig at 1D -- but if anyone thought there was bad blood between them, it diminished when Malik sent a congratulatory tweet about the new single.

Jack & Jack Head West: Also, Real-Time favorites Jack & Jack returned to the top of the Trending 140 with "California," their new single off their first official EP, Calibraska, which was released on July 24. "California" rose thanks to its new music video, helping the song reach No. 1 on three different days.

The pair, who boast more than 5.8 million followers on Vine and have gathered over 60 million views on their YouTube channel, have scored several chart-toppers on the Trending 140, including "Like That," "Tides" and "Wildlife."
