Leadr Works Through His Painful Past on Hypnotic Single 'Gaia': Premiere

At the 2019 Models of Pride conference, pop artist Leadr was performing among his peers and seeing a profound outpouring of love around him, when he had an epiphany. "I realized that all people — and LGBTQ youth especially — need music to help bring context to their lives."

Thus, the singer's latest single "Gaia" (premiering exclusively below) was born. The glowing, ethereal new song, which is the first off of his upcoming debut album, sees Leadr taking a look into his past, as he recalls moments of pain and suffering as a queer boy growing up in the '90s.

Looking at these dark moments, the singer turns to the titular Gaia, or the goddess and personification of the Earth in Greek mythology, for help. "Gaia, dear Gaia/ Teach them love," he sings mournfully on the track's chorus.

Leadr tells Billboard that he wanted to create a track that could serve as a respite for LGBTQ youth today who may be dealing with similarly abusive situations. "It’s my own personal story about working past childhood abuse and I want the song to give people who’ve suffered in a similar way the knowledge that wounds can heal and they can find peace through understanding and self-love," he says. "It’s a journey, but, they can do it because I did it.”

As far as his inclusion of Gaia as the song's focus, Leadr says that her presence is meant to comfort and help heal everyone, no matter their circumstance. "Gaia is the ancestral mother of all life," he says. "She is the wellspring of all that is good and beautiful and in the song I ask her to teach all of her children to love confidently through compassion and understanding.”
