When Dwyane Wade's child told him and Gabrielle Union that she identified as a girl, the two decided that they needed more education on what that meant for them. So, they reached out to the cast of FX's Pose to get more information. Now, the former NBA star is revealing why he and Union decided to make that step.

During his appearance on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen, a caller asked Wade directly what he learned in speaking with the cast of Pose about his daughter Zaya's transition process. Addressing the camera, Wade made it clear that he and Union felt a responsibility to have as much information as possible. "We got information," he told the caller. "We didn't have a lot of information, and we reached out about pronouns. Something as simple as pronouns, we wanted to make sure we didn't get it wrong. So we reached out about the pronouns to make sure we said the right things to our daughter."

Wade elaborated, saying that the process was primarily about making sure his daughter felt comfortable and happy, but also to make sure that he and Union were growing as well. "We reached out to make sure that we had all of the information we needed, because we are learning in this process as well," he said.

Since showing public support for their daughter's transition, Wade and Union have both been lauded by many in the LGBTQ community for setting an excellent example of what parenting a young transgender child should look like. But recently, some have spoken out against the couple — rappers Boosie Badazz and Young Thug both made public statements on Tuesday misgendering Wade's daughter, and in Boosie's case, insisting that Wade was wrong for supporting her choice. Neither Wade nor Union have publicly responded to these comments.
