Over the last year, pop star Sam Smith has been publicly documenting his struggles with body image, gender expression and self-love, keeping his fans in the know about what he’s going through. But today, he took a moment to share some words that could help a fan.

In a string of tweets on Tuesday, Smith took a break from his “first holiday in a long, long time” to talk directly to his fans. "I’ve watched and read so much over the last 6 months to try and make sense of all the mess in my head," he wrote. "Tried to find ways to organise all of my problems so that they are bound and organised into folders and boxes, so that they will never haunt me or effect me again."

Along with a photo of simple text reading "I Am Enough," Smith explained that he is finally beginning to see his problems for what they are. "I’m slowly starting to realise that the words above are the only words that really matter," he wrote. "That mess in your mind is not a mess. It is who you are."

Smith concluded by saying he wanted his relationship with his fans to be mutual, not just a one-sided conversation. "I know we are all dealing with some really heavy shit at times. And I find listening to words from strangers comforting," he wrote. "So hopefully sometimes I can be that stranger to you guys ... Now every morning and every night before you go to bed. Say these words to yourself in the mirror. I’m gonna do it too. We are in this together."
