It can be hard to stay optimistic in the modern age. With news reports showing us the lasting effects of global warming, the deterioration of politics, war, violence and hatred, life in 2019 is hard. Singer-songwriter K.Flay understands that, and isn’t afraid to tackle those issues head on.

On Friday (June 28), K.Flay released her latest single “Not in California,” a scathing indictment of our indifference toward the erosion of societal norms. As she powers her way through the new track, the star lists off all of the issues we face in modern times, before pointing the finger at those who didn’t care enough to do anything about it. “Traded all our sunshine in for a storm/ Don't say I didn't warn you/ We're not in California anymore,” she sings.

In a statement released with her new song, K.Flay revealed that she was inspired to write the new track when she visited Stinson Beach, California, and got to see a place that seemed to be untouched by the problems of modern society. “It felt like magic up there,” she said. “Sometimes you get glimpses of planet Earth and it astounds you. So big and wild and beautiful. It’s easy to forget that we’re connected to this planet.”

The singer continued, saying that trip served as a wake up call to the way things could have been instead of how they are. “These days I’ve been feeling a bit like Dorothy,” she wrote. “I see the plastic islands and the melting glaciers and the 24 hour news cycle where people shout because loud seems to win and I think to myself, ‘We’re not in California anymore.’”

“Not in California” is the fourth advance track released from K.Flay’s upcoming album Solutions, due out July 12. In her statement, the star said that the name of the album is based on the simple idea that “the solution to almost every problem is usually really simple.” She continues, saying, “For me, it’s so basic: staying connected to the people I love, taking care of myself the way I’d want my friends to take care of themselves, and doing things I know are going to make me happy.”
