REYNA Shares Their Summer of Pride Playlist, Drop New Single 'The Way I Loved You': Listen

While listening to a few Spanish-language tracks to “change things up,” Vic and Gab Banuelos, the sister duo that makes up the indie pop outfit REYNA, heard a lyric that they hadn’t expected. On the song “Rosas” by La Oreja de Van Gogh, frontwoman Amaia Montero sings a lyric that translates to, “I am beginning to suspect that real love is only your first love, and the rest are only to forget the first one.”

After a conversation about first loves, the duo hit the studio and created “The Way I Loved You,” their latest shimmery pop single about looking for new love. “There are a lot of mixed emotions in this song, but generally it's about longing for that crazy feeling of being in love but also the desire to love someone new,” Vic tells Billboard.

It’s the right time for them, too: over the last two years, REYNA have gone from being a local Milwaukee duo, then called Vic and Gab, to touring with the likes of CHVRCHES and Kesha, which Gab says taught the duo about the “showwomanship” it takes to make it in the industry. “They just transform into these powerful forces on stage,” she says. “It's very inspiring to see that up close, and we learned that we just have to go all-out and take command of the stage.”

Along with their new single, REYNA offered Billboard Pride their very own playlist for Pride month, taking listeners all the way back to the music that inspired them in their childhood. “I just wanted to include songs that made me feel happy and free,” Vic says.

Tegan and Sara, “Soil Soil”

“This was the first T&S song I ever listened to. One of my best friends sent it to me and it completely changed my life. I was depressed, I was figuring out who I was and I didn't know what to make of my feelings. After listening to 'Soil Soil,' I bought all their albums. I was inspired not only musically but as a gay woman. Their music gave me comfort and a sense of belonging.”

The 1975, “Love It If We Made It”

“I am obsessed with this band. Matty defies all the social norms and the music is just perfect.”

Cyndi Lauper, “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun”

“This is probably one of the greatest songs ever, and she's a gay icon and hero. I dare you to listen to this song an not feel an instant boost of endorphins.”

ABBA, “Chiquitita”

“ABBA is like gay royalty to me! ABBA feels like a world you can escape to, to be your happy and cool self. I also have great memories of dancing to their songs with our parents in the kitchen.”

Sinead O'Connor, “Nothing Compares 2 U”

“I know this is a Prince song but this version is what my heart sounds like when it cries. Perfect breakup song.”

Madonna, “Borderline”

“Madonna has always been a gay advocate, and outspoken about gay rights and same-sex marriage. She's a badass! This song reminds me of driving in the car with my cousins and our mom when we were kids.”

The Cardigans, “Lovefool”

"This song is love. Love for everyone. One of my all time favorites."

Now, Now, “MJ”

"I discovered Now, Now at a show in Milwaukee & I immediately fell in love with their sound and their aesthetic. They are such lovely people and it pours out of their music."

Queen, “Radio Ga Ga”

"Queen is dear to our hearts. Musicianship-wise, they are up there in my top three. Freddie Mercury intentionally or not made a massive impact on gay rights and the AIDS crisis. His name and his anthems will live on forever."

Fun., “All Alright”

"This is one of my go-to songs when I'm feeling down and need some comfort."

CHVRCHES, “Graffiti”

"We love Lauren Mayberry and all she stands for! She always speaks up, she always holds her ground and she also makes great songs."

Sylvan Esso, “Die Young”

"This song is so romantic. Period."

Pronoun, “Everybody Knows”

"This is one of those artists that you discover randomly on Spotify and you just become addicted to that song. We met Alyse at one of our shows and she's just so nice and cool. It's nice to see her doing awesome things as gay women with a guitar."

Rosalia, “Pienso En Tu Mira”

"I've been obsessed with Rosalia since I saw her perform at Coachella. I was blown away by her strength and charisma. I've had this song on repeat since! She's a total badass. Blending genres like flamenco, which is practically sacred, is so ballsy, especially in the Latino world."

Shakira, “Antologia”

"This album is singer-songwriter perfection. I remember listening to this album and falling in love with her voice and how she bends the melodies and the stories in her songs. So good!"
