A Great Big World

Everyone knows how it feels to find that one person who you just can't get enough of and fall head-over-heels in love with them. Pop duo A Great Big World certainly does, and they bottled that feeling into a brand-new song.

On Tuesday (June 18), A Great Big World released their new single "This Is Magic," a glimmering pop anthem about the kind of puppy love that has inspired countless pop songs throughout the generations. The duo, made up of Chad King and Ian Axel, sings about King's first-ever same-sex crush, while the music transitions from a shimmering pop song to a full-on rock number, with shredding electric guitars and infectious drums. "Hey boy, I don't know what it is about you/ I swear, the winter was colder here without you," they sing.

In a statement released with the song, King revealed that the song was written about one of his earliest childhood crushes. "We wrote ‘This Is Magic’ about one of my first real crushes on a guy," he said. "And I was falling hard for him and never felt these feelings before. The world just looked different."

King added that he wanted to make sure that the song was clearly coming from a queer perspective, especially during Pride Month, since so few songs use same-sex pronouns when dealing with love. "You don’t hear many love songs that make it clear it’s from the perspective of a queer artist and we tried to lean into that with this one," he said. "Ultimately, I would love everyone who identifies as LGBTQ+ to feel fully accepted for who they are ... You are who you are. And you love who you love. Period.”
