When it was announced that actor Taron Egerton would be playing Sir Elton John in the upcoming biopic Rocketman, audiences everywhere had one question in their mind: can he sing the part? If the actor’s new cover is any indication, the answer is a resounding yes.

On Wednesday (May 1), Egerton released a cover of Elton John’s “Rocket Man” recorded for the film, showing off his vocal talent and proving he was the correct choice for the role.

In an interview with Zane Lowe on his Beats 1 radio show World Record, Egerton, John and the track’s producer Giles Martin spoke about the cover, saying that the young star was not aiming to do an impersonation of the pop legend. “I think there's moments in the film when I capture Elton a little more than others,” Egerton said, citing the songs “Your Song” and “I’m Still Standing” as examples. “But there are moments where, because of where it sits in the film, it's more difficult to do that, because it's not naturalistic.”

John said that he was immensely proud of the “extraordinary” work Egerton did on the film and the soundtrack, adding that “I don't think any one actor has really done anything like this, ever.” Martin called Egerton a “naturally great singer,” and said that working with him was never a chore. “You let him loose in a studio and he can interpret a song,” he said.

Along with the release of the new single, it was announced that the full soundtrack for the film will be released May 24 via Interscope Records. In a statement released with the announcement, John said that he tried to remain uninvolved with the creation of the soundtrack. “I trusted them to do what they needed to do, artistically, and listening back I've been astonished with the results,” he said. “Getting the music right was the most important thing, as the songs in the film are integral to the story.”
