Cyndi Lauper to Perform at WorldPride Opening Ceremony in New York City
Ciara will also perform at June 26 event.
This year, New York City’s annual Pride festivities are going to be bigger than ever before. Along with the commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the 1969 Stonewall riots, New York will also be hosting the first ever WorldPride event to take place on American soil -- and they’re bringing in some talent to help out.
On Friday (April 5), NYC Pride announced that pop legend Cyndi Lauper would be the headlining performer for the WorldPride opening ceremonies, taking place at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn on Friday, June 26. The star is just one performer of a full, yet-to-be-announced lineup.
“I am thrilled to be a part of the WorldPride Opening Ceremony,” Lauper said in a statement released with the announcement. “I can’t wait to celebrate with my LGBTQIA+ friends and family from across the world.”
R&B superstar Ciara will join Lauper as a performer at the opening ceremonies, and EGOT winner Whoopi Goldberg will serve as the evening’s host. “I’ve been a longtime advocate of the LGBTQIA+ community and this year marks a pivotal moment within our storied history and fight for equality,” Goldberg said. “Hosting a WorldPride event is an absolute honor and I am delighted to be a part of the Opening Ceremony in June.”
The WorldPride opening ceremony will take place on June 26 at 7 p.m. at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.
