Miley Cyrus Talks Redefining Marriage as a Queer Person in 'A Hetero Relationship'

Miley Cyrus opens up about being in “a hetero relationship” in a new interview with Vanity Fair, talking about what her recent marriage to Liam Hemsworth means to her as a queer individual.

When asked about her marriage, the singer felt that the decision to marry Hemsworth provided stability for the both of them after the fire that ravaged their Malibu home. The singer proceeded to explain that her queerness was still very present.

“The reason that people get married sometimes can be old-fashioned, but I think the reason we got married isn’t old-fashioned -- I actually think it’s kind of New Age," Cyrus said. “We’re redefining, to be fucking frank, what it looks like for someone that’s a queer person like myself to be in a hetero relationship. A big part of my pride and my identity is being a queer person.”

Cyrus further elaborated that relationships and love have nothing to do with gender, looks, or sexuality. She explained that what she feels with Hemsworth transcends any sort of definition or binary.

“Relationships and partnerships in a new generation -- I don’t think they have so much to do with sexuality or gender. Sex is actually a small part, and gender is a very small, almost irrelevant part of relationships,” Cyrus added.

Cyrus will be star as a guest judge on Drag Race season 11 premiere on Thursday Feb 28. She will follow the footsteps of Lady Gaga and Christina Aguilera who both appeared as guest judges for the premiere episodes of Season 9 and Season 10 respectively.
