Nakhane Faces His Fears on Anohni-Assisted 'New Brighton': Watch

Madonna-approved South African pop artist Nakhane teams up with English singer Anohni for a powerful track titled “New Brighton.”

The music video opens with Nakhane on the shore of a beach, rising from a small bed of flora as he wakes up from what he describes as his “fall from grace.” As he wanders the shore, dressed head to toe in a bedazzled suit and bold blue eyeshadow, Nakhane begins to realize he’ll “never live in fear again.”

The song’s video and lyrics are influenced by Nakhane’s personal struggle of coming out to his parents and his fundamentalist Christian church at 19. After spending six years preaching conversion therapy, Nakhane found the strength to renounce his religion and learned to accept his sexuality. “New Brighton” touches on these issues through a queer lens, using Nakhane’s angelic androgynous appearance to help tie in religious imagery and his sexuality.
