Americana songwriter Brandi Carlile borrowed a lot of inspiration from the legendary Joni Mitchell for her latest, critically lauded album By the Way, I Forgive You. To honor the Laurel Canyon folkster on her 75th birthday, Carlile took to the Howard Stern Show on Wednesday (Nov. 7) to cover Mitchell’s beloved “A Case of You.”

She spoke to Variety about mustering up the courage to perform this song after working with a vocal coach for the first time. “If I can sing 'A Case of You,' then I’m learning something,” she says. “So I started covering it just to be brave vocally. And on nights that I feel particularly good, I break it out and sing it. But unless I feel 125 percent, I don’t even mess with it.”

Carlile’s tribute makes it evident that the practice has paid off, matching the tone and range of Mitchell’s breathy vocals. She’s accompanied by a string trio and a keyboardist -- transforming the classic from a solitary acoustic strummer into a richer arrangement, similar to what Mitchell did herself for “Both Sides Now.”

Brandi Carlile is also joining James Taylor, Norah Jones, Rufus Wainwright, Emmylou Harris, Seal and other musicians on the two-night Joni 75 tribute concert. The first night took place Tuesday, where she duetted with Kris Kristofferson on “A Case of You.”
