Troye Sivan makes his return to the big screen in less than a month. Alongside Lucas Hedges, Nicole Kidman and Russell Crowe, the singer will appear in Boy Erased, a gay conversion therapy drama due in theaters on Nov. 2. After a screening of the film on Monday night (Oct. 8), the pop star accompanied Hedges for a moderated Q&A about the film, where he opened up about “Revelation,” an original song he wrote for the movie.

Sivan explained that after reading the script, he was set on getting his music into the movie as well: “I was ready to sell my soul. I said, 'You can have any song that I've ever written, I'll write new ones, I'll do anything.'“

Troye got his wish and director Joel Edgerton ended up using two of his tracks in the film: Bloom cut “The Good Side” and “Revelation,” a collaboration with Jónsi of Sigur Ros written specifically for Boy Erased.

“Revelation” was inspired by a scene in the film in where Jared (played by Hedges) has a pure interaction with another boy for the first time.

“God doesn't strike him down and the world doesn't fall apart. And maybe he even kind of enjoys it, and maybe it feels right for the first time,” Sivan explained. “The idea of that person being a revelation in your life, where you can kind of do something that feels so natural and so right and be fine on the other side, that was a really potent thing in my head.”

He added that he had only seen the final cut for the first time in Toronto a few weeks ago. “I was really surprised at how many times Joel used ['Revelation'] throughout the movie,” he said. “I feel like I did a good job of weaseling my way in there.”

While fans have to wait until Oct. 26 to hear the full track, a clip of “Revelation” is featured in the Boy Erased trailer, below.
