Ginger Minj Says She'd 'Love' to Play Ursula, Talks Working with Jennifer Aniston and Dolly Parton: Watch
Billboard Pride stopped to chat with Ginger Minj during RuPaul’s DragCon 2018 on Friday (Sep. 28), discussing the idea of her playing Ursula in the new Little Mermaid remake, her upcoming appearance in a film with Jennifer Aniston and Dolly Parton and when fans can expect the release of her new album.
Following the news that Disney is creating a live-action Little Mermaid remake (potentially starring Zendaya as the lead character), there was buzz among fans -- and Billboard -- about the idea of Ginger Minj joining the project as the villain octopus, Ursula.
Speaking of the campaign to cast her in the role, Minj tells Billboard Pride editor Patrick Crowley that she would love to play the character. “It was just this crazy avalanche of love all at one time,” she says.
“And of course, I’m a girl of a certain size, who would love to play that role, but it never dawned on me that it could be a thing. All of a sudden, everybody’s pulling for it, I’m like, ‘Well s--t, this might actually happen.’”
The drag queen also treats fans to a short rendition of “Poor Unfortunate Souls” in the clip, proving that she definitely has the chops to play the sea witch.
Minj also talks about her upcoming appearance in the film Dumplin’ alongside Jennifer Aniston. “I’m really excited about it,” she says. “It’s a great story, I think it’s an important story and a wonderful cast.”
She reveals that she had an opportunity to work with Dolly Parton on the project, as well, since the country legend penned some original music for the film. “She wrote a couple new songs for the movie, so she wanted to make sure that we really understood what she was trying to say with them,” Minj shares, “And they’re great songs. They’re like true, typical Dolly Parton songs that people are gonna fall in love with.”
As for Aniston, Minj says that the actress actually brought her coffee on her first day on set and thanked Minj for joining the cast. “She was lovely,” says Minj. “She’s just a really warm and inviting person, she was very nice to me.”
In the video interview, which you can watch above, Minj also divulges that her new album (“It’s a good Christian gospel album. It’s called Clown F--ker.”) will be out in December to coincide with the release of Dumplin’ since one of the songs on the record ties into it.
