Decade of 'Drag Race': Ginger Minj Looks Back at Season 7

As part of our Decade of Drag Race week, we caught up with one queen from each season of the Emmy-award-winning series to reminisce about the show’s journey, share some never-been-told memories and throw shade where shade is due.

Below, we spill the tea with the glamour toad of season 7, Ginger Minj. Read all the interviews here.

Is there something that happened behind-the-scenes or off-camera that you’re surprised didn’t make the television edit?

Well, what really surprised me that did make it in was Jasmine having a loaf of bread. It was so random and just a quick little thing. I thought no one was gonna think about it again. I didn’t think about it until I saw it and thought, “Oh, yeah, she had a whole suitcase full of food. I totally forgot about that. Why is this a plot point?” There’s a lot of things you could’ve spent that 45 seconds on but, no, we had to talk about a damn loaf of bread.

Since your season aired, what have you gotten tired of fans bringing up?

If this is their first time meeting me, they’re taken back that I align myself with the “Bitter Old Lady Brigade” even though Miss Fame and I were the same age. I try to tell them, first of all, it’s just a silly old name we call ourselves because they told us to give ourselves a name. We don’t mean any harm by it. When I consider myself older than Miss Fame, it has nothing to do with age. It has to do with drag. Kennedy, Jasmine, Kasha, Katya and myself -- we all came from old school drag which is very different from the new age of drag. It’s not better. It’s not worse. It’s just different. I was Reddit the other day and I know I should never be on there but I am because I love it. They were still going, “I can’t believe Ginger. She kept on calling herself ‘Old Lady Brigade’ and she’s the same age as Miss Fame.” Well, yes, in years but I come from a older school of drag and that’s why I consider myself older than her.

Has there been a starstruck moment since the season aired?

Oh, meeting Jennifer Aniston. Growing up in the 90s, watching Friends and being obsessed with it like everybody else, I had to bite my tongue to keep from asking her, “What’s going on with Ross and the baby?” All I wanted to do was talk about Friends and I knew I shouldn’t if I ever wanted to work again. It's so weird for someone who was such a part of your youth, who you saw in your living room every single week to be standing going, “I brought you a coffee. Thank you so much for being part of our movie. I’m such a fan.” It’s like, “You can’t be a fan of mine. I’m a fan of yours. That’s not how this works.”

Which one queen have you grown the closest to since your season?

Strangely enough, Phi Phi. Before I even went on All Stars with her, we were doing this gig in the middle of season 7. She was hosting it, and I went backstage to do a costume change. I pulled a bobby pin out of my wig but didn’t realize it had gone into my head. I just started bleeding all over my white costume. She didn’t even know me at that point but she ran up and started catching the blood in her hand and grabbing whatever she could find so it wouldn’t ruin my costume. We just started talking after that. I, just like everybody else, watched her on TV and I will still a fan at this point and not fully aware of how things come across on TV so I kept my distance. She really kind of proved to me that she wasn’t all the things that I thought she was in that moment. She’s just fun. She’s really cool.

Is there a lip-sync-for-your-life decision you would’ve changed if you were in Ru’s shoes?

I actually get that a lot because a lot of people think Trixie should’ve stayed over Pearl when the two went up against each other but, having been there in the room, it doesn't translate as it did on TV. There was just this desperate energy that came from Pearl that was kind of magnetic. It was strange. It was really strange and it’s hard to describe. I actually agreed with that one.

What’s one of the most overrated runway looks from your season?

I don’t know. I’m not a fashion girl at all and I would always just sit back and go, “Oh, that’s fashion? Oh, okay.” Because they would go crazy over the same kind of looks every week. And while I would look at them and be like, “Oh, yeah, those girls look absolutely stunning.” It’s really just lingerie. Maybe lingerie is fashion. I didn’t really grasp it and I think that’s why my frustration would come out in Untucked so frequently about it because I just don’t grasp it. I’m a theater queen. So when I go out there in something that had taken me a lot of time and resources but was very costumey and someone would go out there in glorified lingerie, it was -- I wouldn’t say “a slap in the face.” But it did make me go, “Why can’t I understand this at all?”

What’s the worst decision someone made during your season?

It’s a double-edged sword -- the first thing that I want to say is Pearl going up against Ru. I feel like she shot herself in the foot by doing that but I also feel that she would have not been treated with as much respect by the fan base or production if she had not done that. She gets a bad rep for being boring, and she’s not boring. She’s introverted but she’s so artistic, sometimes too artistic for her own good. Just because she does it quietly, people equate that with not being on the same level as other people. I think that she gained a lot more traction and a lot more respect for going up against Ru, but it’s still nothing that I ever would’ve done.

Did the right person win?

Yeah, I do believe so. In the moment, it hurt so bad because I just wanted it so much but, if I had won, the people who hate me never would’ve really come around to giving me a chance because they still would’ve had that roadblock up. I wouldn’t have had so much success post-show if I would’ve won. I will stand by the fact that I did amazing on season 7 but, if you look at the pure track record, Violet never had to lip sync and I had to do it twice and we had the same number of wins. So it came down to what kind of representation do you want for the brand and they chose Violet. I think, in retrospect, that was correct. And I don’t feel like my time is done. I know I’ve already done All Stars and all of that but there’s just something in me that says one day, I will have one of those Drag Race crowns on my head. I don’t know who I’m gonna have to take it from, but I’m gonna have it.
