Decade of 'Drag Race': Bob the Drag Queen Looks Back at Season 8

As part of our Decade of Drag Race week, we caught up with one queen from each season of the Emmy-award-winning series to reminisce about the show’s journey, share some never-been-told memories and throw shade where shade is due.

Below, we spill the tea with season 8 champion Bob the Drag Queen. Read all the interviews here.

Is there something that happened behind-the-scenes or off-camera that you’re surprised didn’t make the television edit?

Well, usually, when Ru sits behind the table, she takes off her heels and she sits back there because it’s more comfortable and she’s back there for hours. One time, when we had the makeover challenge with the cast of Little Women LA, we went to go break for lunch. And right when we went to break, RuPaul came from behind the table and she was like, “Just so y’all mothafuckas know, I’m still in full drag.” And she comes from behind the table and prances back and forth from left to right in front of the other queens and she’s like, “This is how you do it, mothafuckas! I still got it.” And then she stormed off, I just remember that being a really fun moment.

Since your season aired, what have you gotten tired of fans bringing up?

I’ve learned that whenever you’re on a TV show, whatever you do, people will ask you about it all the time. I think when I talked about my mom being sick on the show -- my mom has a chronic illness and it does not go away and she will always be sick for the rest of her life -- and folks always say, “Is your mom any better?” And I’m like, “No, that’s not how it works.” People always ask me how my mom’s doing. “She’s still sick. Don’t ask me that question. She’s sick. My mom is sick.” That’s just part of what it is. They’re like, “I hope your mom is better.” And I’m like, “She’s not. She’s sick.” [laughs] Heaven forbid, one day, she’s not well. What are you gonna do then? You’re gonna be like, “How’s you mom--” “She died.” “Oh, shit.” “Well, yeah.”

Has there been a starstruck moment since the season aired?

Well, I did get to go to Whoopi Goldberg’s birthday party. I went because her granddaughter really loves RuPaul’s Drag Race and me and Whoopi were both at the New York Comedy Festival so she was like, “Are you Bob the Drag Queen? My granddaughter loves you.” And her and her granddaughter have the same birthday, so she was like, “You should come to me and my granddaughter’s birthday party.” So I went to Vegas and hung out with Whoopi Goldberg.

Which one queen have you grown the closest to since your season?

Me, Naomi and Kim are really close. Naomi just came to visit me in San Francisco actually just to hang out and see the play that I’m doing, Angels In America. And even before Drag Race, Monet X Change has been my best friend. That’s my home girl, my home squirrel. It’s contentious but we really do love each other. When you get really comfortable with someone, that’s just how you talk to them.

Is there a lip-sync-for-your-life decision you would’ve changed if you were in Ru’s shoes?

Well, I could be here talking for days about this. I thought that Monet should’ve beat Kameron [Michaels]. There are so many. I could be here all day. I think my season was pretty spot on though, to be honest. I think that maybe the lip sync decision of who got put in the bottom could’ve been changed. I wouldn’t have put Laila McQueen in the bottom on the first episode, but she didn’t win the lip-sync.

What’s one of the most overrated runway looks from your season?

I remember saying in Untucked how much I hated Derrick Berry’s black and white look. I was like, “This is gross. I hate this. This is disgusting. I hate this.”

What’s the worst decision someone made during your season?

I would say Acid Betty choosing to do Nancy Grace in the Snatch Game. That was a pretty terrible decision. That was her downfall and, if you ask Acid Betty, she’ll probably say the same thing.

Did the right person win?

I think that all depends on who you ask. If you ask RuPaul, I’m sure she’d say yes.
