5 Pride Picks: Holland, 'Orange Is the New Black,' Blonde & More
Pride Picks is a new weekly column where we choose five songs, events, shows and other items of interest that showcase the talent from the LGBTQ community. Check out our five picks for this week (July 23), and stay up to date by following Billboard Pride on Instagram and Twitter.
Track to Queue Up
Earlier this month, fast-rising star Holland released “I’m Not Afraid,” and on Friday, the K-pop star released companion single “I’m So Afraid.” The track starts off with a somber piano, but quickly picks up and transforms into a euphoric, dubstep-tinged anthem.
TV Show to Binge
The ladies of Litchfield Penitentiary return to Netflix for a sixth season of Orange Is the New Black this Friday. Season 5 ended with some of our favorite inmates being transferred to new prisons, and the upcoming season’s trailer (and an updated opening credit sequence) shows shots of their new living quarters. Check out the trailer below.
Music Video to Obsess Over
U.K.-based DJ duo Blonde have released a fierce music video for their house banger “Me, Myself & I.” The visual is a celebration of queer culture, featuring drag stars Freida Slaves and Cara Melle, London club kid Prince JayJay, feminist artist Venus Libido and model Kitty Underhill. The track features British singer Bryn Christopher.
Event to Be Seen At
Performance artist Enrique Jesus Hernandez will present his monthly LGBTQ showcase Gay Guts this Sunday. The Los Angeles music show was created to “encourage unity through vulnerability.” Gay Guts takes place the last Sunday of every month at Boardner’s. This month’s lineup features Alan Ishii, Jaake Castro and Kento, as well as other “special guts.”
EP to Check Out
Singer-songwriter Sean Barna caught the attention of Counting Crows’ Adam Duritz; in fact, the frontman sings backup vocals on “Routines,” a track on the folky singer’s new EP Cissy. The five-track collection explores queer themes, with “Modern Man” tackling gender roles: “I’ll paint my nails if it suits me/ Breathtaking, isn’t it, masculinity?”
