Watch Ginger Minj Give a Pride Month Herstory Lesson on Gladys Bentley
To celebrate Gay Pride Month, Billboard enlisted some RuPaul’s Drag Race queens to help give some herstory lessons on LGBTQ heroes. So far, Shea Couleé provided a rundown on Crystal LaBeija and Tammie Brown educated us on We'wha. This week, Ginger Minj is leading a session on Gladys Bentley.
“Dressed in a top hat and a tuxedo, Gladys Bentley was one of the premier performers at Harlem speakeasies during Prohibition,” Ginger Minj explains. “She was known to frequently perform in front of an entire chorus line of drag queens…before it was cool.”
She also notes that Bentley had a very public marriage ceremony – although it was not legally recognized – to a white woman in 1931.
