America’s first-reigning queen of RuPaul's Drag Race, BeBe Zahara Benet, may not have taken home a second crown on All Star 3, but that didn’t stop the OG winner from charming a new generation of fans with her Cameroonian magic. Her most memorable moment from the season? Jungle Kitty. When tasked with creating characters for an all-drag girl group, BeBe developed the wild-spirited character and dazzled the judging panel. Now, the queen is bringing the iconic character’s infamous scatting to life in the form of a new song, complete with a cinematic music video.

BeBe talked to Billboard about her inspiration for “Jungle Kitty” and the memes inspired by her memorable character: “I didn’t know there were so many jungle kitties out there who connected to what I was hoping to express.”

What is your inspiration behind the “Jungle Kitty” music video?

Jungle Kitty is one of the colors of my persona that allows me to be free, allows to be untamed, allows me to have fun and let loose and be ferocious, raw, unapologetic, and carefree. When I decided to write the song, I wanted to really channel that part of me that wouldn’t apologize for the way I look or how I present myself — just to be able to own my power. I thought it would be amazing to put it in a track.

Of course, Jungle Kitty got really famous when I was doing it on All Stars 3. I was just writing the song, and the words came out — that was the state of mind i was in. But the fans and supporters for some reason identified with that side of me and decided to make it go viral: “We need a full song, we need a full song.” So I decided now to make it a full song.

Were you surprised seeing all the memes and reactions? Those lyrics were a hit on Twitter.

I was really surprised. When I wrote the verse on the show, I didn’t really overthink it. The words just came out, and I started singing it outloud. I thought it had a really good ring to it. But I didn’t know what it was going to end up being. I did know it was going to stick in people’s heads. But I didn’t know there were so many jungle kitties out there who connected to what I was hoping to express. It’s amazing. I’m happy that people can connect with that.

What else do you have coming up this year?

Of course, with the music video and the single coming out, we are going to be working on a tour coming up. I’m very excited to be able to take the Jungle Kitty experience to different places and travel with it and meet all the different jungle kitties out there.

I’m in the studio. A lot of my fans and supporters have been asking for an album. I want to make sure it’s done really well, so I’m working on some really cool music with my creative team that I’m very excited to share with the world.

And of course there’s the documentary, Being BeBe, in the works. It’s a very universal story — I hope people will be able to take something away from it.
