Adam Rippon Revisits His Olympic Skating Song in Graceful Contemporary Dance on 'Dancing With the Stars:' Watch
If their track record is any indication of their current standing, then Adam Rippon and Jenna Johnson are handily in the lead on the current season of Dancing With the Stars: Athletes. After two stunning performances, earning them the top scores of each respective night, the duo were faced with pulling off yet another masterclass in dance on Monday night’s (May 14) epsiode.
Performing to “O” by Coldplay, the song that Rippon skated to during his bronze-winning Olympic program, the two performed a beautiful contemporary number. The performance’s start sees the two decked out in feathers, slowly dancing in a cage, reflecting the song’s opening line: “Flock of birds/ Hovering above/ Just a flock of birds/ It’s how you think of love.”
Rippon dedicated the performance to his mother, saying in a tearful clip before the dance that she has been his strongest source of support for as long as he’s been alive. “I came out in my early 20s,” the skater said, fighting back tears. “She was always there for me, and it didn’t matter to her.”
The emotional, technically beautiful performance certainly caught the eyes of the judges. “I just wanted to thank you,” said judge Carrie Ann Inaba. “This is why artists create; to have moments like this where it’s just pure perfection.”
The judges went on to give Rippon and Johnson’s routine a 39 out of 40, the highest score not only of the night, but of the season so far. Needless to say, the duo earned their spot in the final three, along with pairs Tonya Harding and Sasha Farber, and Josh Norman and Sharna Burgess.
