In a statement released Thursday (April 26), the GLAAD Media Awards announced that queer rock icons Melissa Etheridge and Adam Lambert will be opening up the 29th Annual GLAAD Media Awards in New York on Saturday, May 5.

“Melissa Etheridge is a living legend whose coming out 25 years ago was a powerful inspiration for the entire LGBTQ community, myself included,” said GLAAD President and CEO Sarah Kate Ellis in an official statement. “Add in the amazing Adam Lambert to the mix and this is sure to be a one-of-kind performance to remember.”

The two will take to the stage to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Etheridge’s breakthrough 1993 album Yes I Am with a duet performance of her classic song “I’m the Only One.” This will be the first time Lambert and Etheridge have ever performed together.

Both artists have a storied history of LGBTQ advocacy. After coming out in 1993, Etheridge dedicated much of her life to fighting for marriage equality and LGBTQ rights around the world. Lambert became the first openly gay artist to have an album debut at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 charts back in 2012 with Trespassing, along with his continued advocacy for acceptance within the LGBTQ community.

The artists will be opening up the awards show, which will be honoring director Ava DuVernay, actress Samira Wiley and JAY-Z’s mother Gloria Carter with awards for their promotion of visibility for the LGBTQ individuals at the awards.
