In honor of Black History Month, pop singer Justin Michael Williams decided to take some of his favorite songs dedicated to the movement and mix them together. The result is his “Stay Woke” medley, a minute-long mashup of songs like Beyoncé’s “Freedom,” Kendrick Lamar’s “Alright,” Michael Jackson’s “They Don’t Care About Us” and more.
Williams said one of his greatest struggles as an artist was finding the right way to speak out on issues he cares about. “I wanted to create something for Black History Month to honor all of the artists who have inspired me to move beyond my fears and speak out against systemic racism and inequality,” he said. “This song and visual explores the tension I feel internally being a gay black man in America.”
