'RuPaul's Drag Race All Stars': Season 3 Queens Reflect on the Songs That Sent Them Home
The season 3 premiere of RuPaul's Drag Race All Stars is nearly upon us, and it's anyone's guess as to which queen will get the chop after just one episode of the fiercest reality show on TV.
Ahead of Thursday (Jan. 25) night's premiere (VH1, 8pm ET) Billboard spoke to the cast -- minus the mystery tenth queen, of course. No tea no shade, but we asked them to reflect on the songs they unsuccessfully lip synced to on earlier seasons. When the song that sent them home comes on the radio or at a bar, can they still enjoy those iconic LGBTQ anthems, or did Drag Race ruin those tunes forever for them?
Here's what everyone had to say.
Morgan McMichaels - “Carry On” by Martha Wash
"I've performed with Martha on many occasions at Prides and circuit parties. I love her and I love that song. And I have a special place in my heart for that because I got to lip sync with Sahara who is unfortunately no longer with us. When I hear that song I always think of her sailing off of the stage and landing in the splits and thinking, 'I'm fucked, I'm going home.'"
Trixie Mattel – "Show Me Love" by Robin S.
"'Show Me Love'? It's playing in every gay bar every 5 minutes. Every time it comes on I'm like Eleven in Stranger Things -- I get a nosebleed. And I'm always shave-headed too – and I'm in a gown. Triggered."
Shangela – "Even Angels" by Fantasia
"I love Fantasia so much. First of all I was a huge fan of American Idol when she was on it and when she became our judge I was like HALLELOO. Now I went home to her but I remember her looking at me the whole time and going 'you're so beautiful – I'm so sorry.' And I was like 'It's okay, you're Fantasia!" My favorite number of hers is when she did Patti Labelle's 'Lady Marmalade,' when she performed for Patti. Lovely. So every time I hear Fantasia, I'm not shook."
Kennedy Davenport – "Born Naked" by RuPaul ft. Clairy Browne
"I love the song. It was beautiful and during the lip sync it was a liberating song. It was inspirational – anytime I hear it now I get my life all over again."
Aja – "Finally" by CeCe Peniston
"I thoroughly have always been plagued by 'Finally.' My drag daughter used to perform it all the time before I was on Drag Race. No, I'm not plagued by it -- I'm reminded of my departure. And not in a bad way, just… remember that time? Yeah… But I'm back so who cares?"
Milk – "Whatta Man" by Salt-N-Pepa with En Vogue
"I still perform it baby! I learned it and I learned it well, and I thought I did amazing. It's fun."
BenDeLaCreme – "Stronger" by Kelly Clarkson
[In response to the question "do you still enjoy it?"] "Absolutely not. But to be fair – I didn't enjoy it to begin with. Although I love that other one she sings, that one other song, 'Since U Been Gone.'"
Chi Chi Devayne – "The Realness" by RuPaul
"It's always nostalgia. When [I hear any] lip sync song, my heart still drops into my stomach. I'm in the car like 'eeeeee' reliving the whole moment."
Thorgy Thor – "And I'm Telling You I'm Not Going" by Jennifer Holliday
"I love it! I'm always looking for Chi Chi [when it comes on in bars]. I'm like 'let's do it, let's get some tips!'"
