Peppermint of 'RuPaul's Drag Race' Fame To Release Documentary
Peppermint, one of the final four contestants on RuPaul’s Drag Race, has had cameras on her for nearly every moment of her life for the past several years -- throughout her journey on the popular VH1 competition and in the making of her forthcoming documentary, Project Peppermint.
Peppermint is set to release the documentary with filmmaker Oriel Pe’er in 2018. The film captures her journey as a transwoman, illustrating her experience performing, her ascension to Drag Race fame, and undergoing surgery. The film also features interviews with her and close friends Laverne Cox, Trace Lysette and Bob the Drag Queen.
Director Pe’er, who is a long time friend of Peppermint's, said, “About a year ago Peppermint reached out to me and told me she was about to go through her surgery and we spoke about how interesting it would be to film the process. I was hesitant at first, but I was at a time in my career where I was searching for a personal creative project, and so a few days later I showed up at her place with my camera and we started filming. Looking back at the footage, it’s amazing to see how rich this first encounter with the camera was. She really opened up and I felt like she was ready to tell her story.”
He said, “When I filmed her on the night of RPDR premiere party, it dawned on me that she has been preparing patiently her entire life for this moment. It was a cathartic moment for me and it gave me much hope and inspiration."
Peppermint said when people watch her film, she hopes they take away “a better understanding of the types of things some people go through on their journey toward authenticity and an honest depiction of some of the crazy experiences Drag Race girls have during the climb.”
