For Gay Pride Month, Billboard asked numerous pop culture luminaries to write 'love letters' to the LGBTQ community. Below, singer Allie X shares hers. Read more Pride Month love letters here.
Where to start. From the first drag queens I met at age ten in Provincetown, to my first and second 'boyfriend', to some of my best friends in high school and college, this is the community that has raised me, believed in me, helped me come into myself and given me any bit of success I have had on this journey being an artist. It's very easy to write a love letter to the LGBT community.
Some thank yous:
Thank you for the camaraderie, the humor, for giving me the confidence to be bold in the ugliness that makes me special. Thank you for taking me dancing, making me feel beautiful, for teaching me about culture, music, art... For giving me an alternative to settling down and having kids. Thank you for being sensitive and strong as fuck at the same time. Thank you for making me SCREAM with laughter, thank you for causing a scene with me. Thank you for bitch-slapping me when I was being a bitch. Thank you for giving me a career. Thank you for listening to the details in my work. Thank you for giving me the inspiration to create knowing that my work will be analyzed and appreciated by truly passionate, intelligent people....
I feel so much better knowing that no matter what happens I'll always have a safe place to go. The world is a much more diverse and open place because of the LGBT community.
