LeAnn Rimes: Love Letter to the LGBTQ Community
For Gay Pride Month, Billboard asked numerous pop culture luminaries to write 'love letters' to the LGBTQ community. Below, singer and gay rights advocate LeAnn Rimes shares hers. Read more Pride Month love letters here.
A long time ago, my sweet southern mother very lovingly once asked me, in her very classic sing-song-y Mississippi drawl, “Le-Ann, do you have any stra-ight friends?"
I mean I do, but the gay-to-straight ratio was never and most likely will never be balanced. By far, the LGBTQ community is one of the best things that has ever happened to me.
My dad’s brother, my uncle William, was gay. He passed away from AIDS when I was eleven. Even at that young age, I was aware of the judgment that was being thrown his way. I witnessed those who loved him treat his being gay as if it was a disease. What I remember of him is his bright spirit that lit up the world wherever he went. He was a beautiful soul. Now, every time, everywhere I get to sing -- or when I get stand up alongside my LGBTQ brothers and sisters -- I get to give him a voice.
I am so thankful for all the love my LGBTQ fans have shown me. I hope they feel it coming back from me full circle.
