Grace Mitchell: Love Letter to the LGBTQ Community
For Gay Pride Month, Billboard asked numerous pop culture luminaries to write 'love letters' to the LGBTQ community. Below, up-and-coming singer-songwriter and ally to the LGBTQ community Grace Mitchell shares hers. Read more Pride Month love letters here.
"Sometimes boys like boys, and girls like girls and that is perfectly okay." I had a billion more follow-up questions to ask her about the logistics of gay people having children, why God made them gay, how gay people had sex, and should I be gay one day, would I be loved? As the years passed I continue to learn more and more about queerness, identification, gender, sex, love, all the while hearing my mother’s words echo in my mind: “That is perfectly okay.”
Now, as an adult, every day I make new discoveries about myself, piecing together the fragments floating in space that define me. I always remind myself that my feelings are okay, my body is okay, and my thoughts are okay. We should all find joy in experimentation and taste the danger of exploration. We should educate our friends on what it feels like to try something new, and encourage them to dig beneath the surface. We shouldn’t define ourselves too quickly in order to appease a thirsty audience. Instead we should let them sit on the edge of their seat and through time they’ll realize that whatever they're about to see will be perfectly okay.
