Lorrie Morgan: Love Letter to the LGBTQ Community
For Gay Pride Month, Billboard asked numerous pop culture luminaries to write 'love letters' to the LGBTQ community. Below, country legend Lorrie Morgan shares hers. Read more Pride Month love letters here.
I’ve had a pretty large LGBTQ fanbase for most of my career. When I was asked to co-headline South Carolina Pride back in 2014 along with Deborah Cox, I’ll tell ya, that crowd sang every word to every song. I couldn't believe it and it was probably the most fun I’ve ever had on stage.
Over the past few years, more and more country artists have been coming out in support of the LGBTQ community. I just want people to be able to love who they want to love and be themselves. I mean, who the hell am I to judge? It’s been a long road to try to get the country music community to be supportive, but I think the tide is turning in a way and it warms my heart to see artists like Carrie Underwood, Miranda Lambert and others not being afraid to say that they believe in equality for all.
You know what my favorite movie is? The Birdcage. I absolutely love that movie. My gay best friend always calls me Miss Albert because I’m always walking around like, “I need a Pirin tablet.”
