Singer-songwriter John Legend, who won an Oscar for Selma’s “Glory” in 2015, came to the 2017 Oscars in support of La La Land as both an actor and producer. In honor of the film that’s been nominated for an impressive 14 nominations, Legend walked the red carpet tonight (Feb. 26) wearing a black Gucci tuxedo complete with an oversized bowtie and cumberbund.

“John has a lot of award shows during this season, so we save our most traditional and respectful looks for the Oscars,” Legend’s stylist of ten years David Thomas tells Billboard. “This is the time to do black tie in the most perfect way. The John Legend going [to the Oscars] is an actor and producer – this is the other side of John, not the performer and singer-songwriter you’d see at the American Music Awards or the Grammys.”

The one-button Gucci tuxedo features a fitted, contemporary silhouette despite its classic nature. For Legend and Thomas, the red carpet look came together with special attention to his previous award show ensembles and, of course, his wife Chrissy Teigen. “I spoke with her stylist Monica Rose because we wanted them to work as a couple as well as shine individually,” Thomas explained. “We liaise and share pictures and information, which is important.”

Bringing Legend's black tie attire together are accessories from the jewelry collection by Emma Watson’s solidarity campaign HeForShe. The collection, designed by New York-based fine jewelry designer Monique Péan, donates 100% of proceeds to UN Women so that men and boys can further engage as agents of change in the battle for gender equality. Legend shows his solidarity with HeForShe cufflinks and shirt studs.
