Andra Day attends the 88th Annual Academy Awards at Hollywood & Highland Center on Feb. 28, 2016 in Hollywood, California.

How stylist Wouri Vice put together a winning Oscars look for Andra Day with less than a day's notice.

After walking the 2016 Oscars red carpet, singer Andra Day took to the stage last night (Feb. 28) at the post-ceremony Governors Ball, where she performed in a regal pale yellow column dress by SAFiYAA, an emerging British label that is only six seasons old.

Day, who was a nominee at the Grammys several weeks ago, channeled some major old Hollywood glamour at the event by accenting her look with glitzy statement accessories and a deep red lip. Her stylist, Wouri Vice, tells Billboard why they knew the dress -- which ultimately landed her on numerous best-dressed lists -- would turn heads.

Tell us about this gorgeous look.
It was a nod to old Hollywood. Andra did a great job at the Governors Ball, that’s where she performed last night, also in that dress. I’m proud of her.

What did you choose to accessorize the look with?
We went with a Swarovski clutch. She also wore Pedro Garcia shoes and jewelry from both Open Hearts and Csarite.

What was the process like? This was her first time on the Oscars carpet.
I got a phone call on Friday that she was going to the Governors Ball, which meant she was also walking the red carpet. So I literally had 24 hours to scramble.

That must have been so stressful!
Andra is such a beauty in her own way, so it makes everything much easier -- though it didn't eliminate the stress entirely. I pulled in about 12 dresses for her to choose from, and that color was just really... it’s not a pastel but it’s not exactly a jewel tone either, but it had a really regal vibe to it. I knew she was going to go for that dark lip, and the hair, I just love the interest of that shoulder strap.

So it was really no contest?
Well, we were going back between that and another dress, but ultimately we wanted to make sure we stayed in the realm of what Andra does, and what better time than the Oscars to show that type of flair? We definitely knew that we wanted to go somewhere in the old Hollywood realm, and that’s kind of how that dress felt. And literally down to the minute while she was in hair and makeup there was the conversation of, "What do you think this [look will] read like?" Ultimately we felt like the yellow was just the best.

What was your favorite thing about the dress?
That peek-a-boo slit on the side. It's kind of unknowing, if you look at the dress from the front, or the back, you’re not going to see it. But there were those moments when she was posing on the red carpet and she would stick her foot out and let you know that there was a very interesting detail there. The neckline of the dress, which was on a slant, gave the illusion that it was just kind of hanging there -- yet the whole look still has a structure to it.
