After flashing footage of West's infamous interruption of her acceptance speech at last year's VMAs, Swift appeared in a beige dress and ruby-red lipstick and began strumming the tune, which featured lyrics about "losing your balance on a tightrope." Striding out of a set design shaped like a decrepit house, Swift performed the gentle chorus: "It's all right, just wait and see/Your string of light is still bright to me/ Who you are is not who you've been/You're still an innocent."

Swift brought the ballad home as cracks of thunder transitioned into an image of a rising sun on the screen behind her. "It's never too late to get back," the singer crooned.

Swift may be right: West's performance, set to close out the VMAs, could help restore his reputation after earning boos at last year's show.
