Brandon Maxwell arrives at the Make Equality Reality Annual Gala on Nov. 18, 2019 in New York.

Walmart announced on Tuesday (Mar. 16) that Brandon Maxwell is now part of its team.

The celebrity-loved fashion designer will collaborate with the retailer as Creative Director for its elevated fashion brands, Free Assembly and Scoop, where he'll lead the design and production of seasonal collections for men’s, women’s and children’s clothing and accessories.

“Working with Walmart has long been a dream of mine. Like many people across the country who live in a small town, Walmart was the destination for everything where I grew up in Texas, including clothing,” Maxwell said in a press release. “This partnership allows me to bring the experience and joy of fashion to countless people who live in small towns across the country. Everyone deserves to have access to well-designed clothing at an accessible price point. I am energized by this collaboration with Walmart, as it is not only an opportunity to make exceptional design accessible to all but with our charitable initiatives, we will work to help people improve their lives. That is after all the most fashionable thing we can do.”

Maxwell, who won the Womenswear Designer of the Year Award at the CFDA Awards 2019, was Lady Gaga’s design director from 2009 to 2012, before becoming the star’s lead creative. He has also dressed high-profile clients including Michelle Obama and the Duchess of Sussex. He launched his eponymous luxury brand in 2015.

He was also the creative genius behind Gaga's epic four-look style transformation at the 2019 Met Gala.

The collaboration is a first for Walmart’s fashion private brands, which aims to maintain quality, on-trend and accessible styles for customers no matter their budget.
