The Weeknd performs onstage during Harper's BAZAAR Celebration of "ICONS By Carine Roitfeld" at The Plaza Hotel presented by Infor, Laura Mercier, Stella Artois, FUJIFILM and SWAROVSKI on Sept. 8, 2017 in New York City.

“Truman Capote would not understand this,” Jim Carrey remarked, as he crossed the threshold of the Plaza Hotel ballroom, where the author threw his famed Black and White Ball in 1966. “They were quieter times back then.” Underway was a decidedly unquiet performance by The Weeknd for a Harper’s BAZAAR party that drew out a fleet of celebrities, more than a few brawny security guards on high alert and an overwhelming number of fans packing the hotel entrances.

The event, which was presented by Infor, Laura Mercier, Stella Artois, Fujifilm and Swarovski, celebrated Harper’s BAZAAR’s Icons, a portfolio in the September issue curated by Carine Roitfeld. The feature explores the overlap between fashion and music and Courtney Love, Dionne Warwick, Grimes, Travis Scott and Ryuichi Sakamoto all appeared in shots by the acclaimed photographer Brigitte Lacombe. The Weeknd was pictured alongside models Irina Shayk and Adriana Lima on the cover. The yearly event has become a Fashion Week bright spot; the last three years have seen performances by Kanye West, Katy Perry and Lady Gaga.

In a lengthy and highly energetic set, The Weeknd sang tracks including ‘Starboy,’’ ‘Party Monster,’ ‘I Feel It Coming’ and ‘Can’t Feel My Face.’ The enraptured crowd included Selena Gomez (in one of the few public appearances she’s made with The Weeknd since they began dating), Kim Kardashian West (wearing a classic metallic strapless Versace with platinum blond hair to rival Donatella’s), Kendall Jenner, Dionne Warwick, Ciara (on her first late night out since the April birth of her second child), Jared Leto and Teyana TaylorNicki Minaj arrived midway through the performance, ensconced by a team of bodyguards, and Courtney Love caught up with Carrey. Amber Rose viewed the performance from behind her sunglasses alongside boyfriend 21 Savage, who wore a Saint Laurent suit with sequin lapels and a custom ruby and diamond encrusted ring Rose had custom designed for him, and greeted Orange Is the New Black star Dascha PolancoDJ Harley Viera-Newton and Issa Rae before quickly exiting at the concert’s end. Dancing in the front of the crowd were Larry and Laurent Bourgeois, the Beyoncé touring dance team known as Les Twins. Paris Jackson, who appeared on BAZAAR’s April cover, pulled up her floral gown to reveal the Birkenstock sandals she had on below its hem, likely one of the footwear brand’s only appearances at the event.

Rae, who was making a quick stop at Fashion Week while in town promoting the soundtrack for the second season of her HBO series Insecure, had been receiving plenty of attention from fans begging for early intel on Sunday’s season finale. (Her lips were sealed.) Music has been a critical element of the show – The Weeknd’s ‘Die For You’ featured prominently in a pivotal scene from the fourth episode – and Rae was particularly excited to have included tracks by SZA this season. “[Her] album [Ctrl] matches our entire season,” Rae said. A longtime fan of the singer, Rae wrote a plotline involving an invitation to a SZA concert. “It’s so crazy because we wrote that so far in advance, without her album coming out. We didn’t even know it would align with her actual concert.”

The party was part of a busy Fashion Week for Ty Dolla $ign, who just wrapped his soon to be released album Beach House 3. “I’ve had a good time -- to say the least!” he told Billboard, singling out a VFILES show he called “pretty dope.” Dressed in a Saint Laurent metallic shirt unbuttoned to his navel, he was more than happy to engage with the fashion world. “I guess everybody likes how I dress, so hell yeah!”
