This week’s Stylist Spotlight -- Billboard’s new style column that gets behind the scenes with music’s coolest warbdrobing geniuses -- features the hilarious and multifaceted Amanda Valentine. Styling the Grammy-nominated rock duo Twenty One Pilots is just one bullet point in a long list of Valentine fun facts: Her older brother is Maroon 5’s lead guitarist James Valentine, she competed on seasons 11 and 13 of the Emmy Award-winning Project Runway, and she plays garage rock bass.

Based in Nashville, the 35-year-old stylist and designer also wardrobes other all-male bands and has her own women’s clothing line, Amanda Valentine. Get to know Valentine, and her work with some of 2016’s most successful rock artists, below.

Describe Twenty One Pilots’ style in three words.

Defiant, unpretentious, fresh.

What’s the most out-there look you and Twenty One Pilots pulled?

I think the way they start their shows is pretty punk -- matching suits and face masks. It feels like something Devo would do. That’s probably a good way to think: What would Devo do?

And another. You're too cute @joshuadun! Photo by @reelbearmedia (he can be my fren too you guys don't get mad)

Their best style moment of 2016?

The “Heathens” video dream sequence we put together was a great one. We were trying to give a very subtle nod to Johnny Cash’s Folsom Prison performance. You can barely just make out the bolo tie…

How did competing on Project Runway influence your styling tendencies?

Project Runway taught me to trust my gut and make quick, confident decisions. I just know it when I see it.

If you were to style your brother James’ band, Maroon 5, what would you put them in?

I love the way their stylist Matt Goldman dresses them. He’s really figured out everyone’s “uniform.” My brother has more striped long-sleeved T-shirts and black skinny jeans than anyone else on the planet.

Sure loved seeing this mug so much lately! @jamesbvalentine ------------✌--️✌--✌--

What’s a piece every guy should have in his closet?

I think every guy needs to do the work and figure out what his jeans company and size are and then stick with them. Most companies offer free return shipping, so I suggest guys order six to 10 pairs and trying them all on at home.

Piece every guy should throw away now?

T-shirts that are too tight. Stop it. Don’t be afraid to be oversized.

Happy Birthday @joshuadun! Sorry for the bday beat down! (Just kidding it was makeup for a #twentyonepilots video)

What’s one piece you’ll be buying yourself for the holidays?

I’m in love with the minimalist jewelry of Natalie Joy and Portmanteau.

What is your must-have piece for winter?

I’ll either be wearing my vintage Adidas quilted jacket or one of my blanket coats.

Most underrated accessory?

Beanies.

Who’s one up-and-coming designer you’ve got your eye on?

Another Nashville designer, Poni Silver, has a great line Black by Maria Silver. Her jumpsuits rule, and we randomly used to be in a band together in L.A. Ha!
