Designer Christian Siriano Talks Dressing Lady Gaga, Who He'd Like to Work With & More
On the fourth day of New York Fashion Week (Sept. 10), guests at designer Christian Siriano’s show were transported from ArtBeam Studio in Chelsea to the Italian Rivera courtesy of the citrus orange-stripe umbrellas dangling from the ceiling and the collection’s mix of bright stripes, sheer organza overlays, and woven raffia pieces.
"I really liked the idea of taking my customer on a holiday, and I wanted to pack her bags for her," Siriano said. "We looked at a lot of vintage photos of Jackie Onassis from the '60s and '70s; she went there every summer, and I felt like I wanted my client to be there."
Billboard spoke with Siriano backstage, post-show about his spring 2017 collection, what it was like dressing Lady Gaga for the Academy Awards, and the one singer he would love to work with.
How did the music play into your collection?
Music is important. Brad Walsh, my husband, did all the music and he knows what's happening in the world and I think that’s really important. We open with Juliette Lewis, who is my friend, and her new song ("Hello Hero"), which I love. I love having Solange’s “Losing You” at the end because she's my lover and you know, I thought I needed the music to still be modern. Some of the clothes were vintage-inspired and the music had to be what women are listening to now.
Tell us about dressing Lady Gaga for this year’s Academy Awards.
Amazing, I've dressed her a bunch of times. She's awesome and musicians are really fun because they take different risks. They're not judged the same way as an actress. So it's fun! We just did Arianna Grande for Time's 100 Most Influential Gala.
What’s your favorite Gaga song? What about Grande, whom you've also dressed?
Oh my God. I'm always going to be a "Poker Face" fan. I was actually a big fan of "Manicure" off her last album (2013's Art Pop), which I felt like should have and could have been a number one single, and I loved it. I also like her new song ("Perfect Illusion"); I think it's really good. For Ariana, I really love "Dangerous Woman." I think it’s a good song with a good balance of being different, but still cool.
Which music star do you most want to dress and why?
Katy Perry! You know what's really interesting? I've dressed pretty much everyone -- Rihanna, Lady Gaga -- but I've never really dressed Katy Perry for a red carpet. Which is weird, because I’ve worked with Johnny [Wujek, Perry's stylist and America’s Next Top Model judge] before, and it's just never worked out [with Perry].
