J-pop rockers Novelbright premiered a cover of Billie Eilish’s “Bad Guy” during YouTube’s Music Foundry Fest on Friday (Oct. 23).

The rising five-man band is the only Japan-based act participating in the global Foundry project that showcases and supports new artists from around the world, out of 12 new acts from various countries selected for the inaugural 2020 edition.

Novelbright hails from Osaka and made its major label debut in August with “Sunny Drop,” featured in Coca Cola Zero Sugar TV commercials. The group’s rocking rendition of the Grammy-winning hit is the first official cover in Japan, arranged by guitarist Kaito Yamada -- a longtime fan of the 18-year-old superstar -- and highlights some versatile whistling by frontman Yudai Takenaka, a two-time international whistling champion.

The audio version of Novelbright’s “Bad Guy” cover can be streamed on various platforms including Apple Music and Spotify.
